Northwest AI Seaplane Bases
*********************************

Description
===========
Default FS2004 seaplane bases are not functional for AI traffic. Revised or new AFCADs are provided for the following locations in British Columbia, Canada and Washington State which are functional for a reasonable volume of AI traffic. All except 0W0 have been tested with Ultimate Traffic. Docks are closer to the real-world locations, given the limitations of shoreline accuracy in FS2004 and add-ons.

0W0 – Seattle Seaplanes (Lake Union)
CAC8 – Nanaimo Harbour
CAF6 – Stuart Island
CAM6 – Cortes Bay
CAV5 – Sullivan Bay
CYCH – Coal Harbour (Vancouver)
S60 – Kenmore Air Harbor Inc (Seattle Lake Union)
W39 – Roche Harbor
W55 – Kenmore Air Harbor

These AFCADs have only been tested in FS2004.

Also included is a flatten file for Lake Union.

CYHC unrealistically has two parallel "runways" to improve traffic flow. The runways are also closer to Stanley Park than they should be.

Installation
============
Unzip the contents of the zip file into a temporary location and copy ALL the contents of the /scenery folder to your FS9/addon scenery/scenery folder.

Required and Suggested Scenery
==============================
- my Victoria and Area Enhancements #2: vicenh02.zip includes CYWH AFCAD needed for full UT operation, and 3D docks.
- Harvey Janszen’s East Vancouver Island scenery: EVI04.zip
- Holger Sandmann’s stunning Northwest Scenery: us_wa_nc.zip
- Ted Griggs Vancouver Harbour scenery: vancouver_harbour.zip. Ted’s docks will overlay the docks in the AFCAD if you have this scenery. Functional parking spots are interspersed with Ted’s static aircraft. Note the DHC-6 in Ted’s package is not FS9 compatible.
- my Victoria and Area Enhancements #3: vicenh03.zip. AI boats scuttling around the harbour and area

Known Issues
============
The shorelines in FS9 and in some addons are inaccurate, so the real-world location of docks and runways have been adjusted to be accurate in relation to the shoreline.

No aircraft are included. I have not yet found any DHC-2, DHC-3 and DHC-6 models appropriate for AI use. All the ones I've found are too complex, so compromise frame-rates, and some have flight models that act strangely in AI. To simulate the traffic, for my own use, I have repainted the Aviat Husky in appropriate liveries. Hopefully the recent number of seaplane base downloads will encourage the design of AI-suitable aircraft. For simplicity you may want to use the default Cessna Amphibian for all aircraft. But it’ll have its wheels down!

Dock locations on Lake Union are adjusted to not collide with USA Roads. If you don’t have USA roads you may wonder why the docks are so far from the shore!

Parking is tricky: I’ve done my best to ensure that planes align with the docks. And certain aircraft will not pushback, but just happily leave straight from the dock. This is aircraft dependent, and you may see some aircraft pushback and collide in the process with an aircraft behind them. They don’t seem to mind.

Dock locations in Vancouver Harbour (CYHC) are NOT corrected to the temporary locations they’ve been moved to while the convention centre is being expanded.

Seaplane AI functioning is tricky. You may find on occasion that a plane waits at the hold short point for clearance that never comes, and after 5 minutes times out and disappears. Once in a while an impatient plane plows into another at the hold short point and they sit in the same location until the first plane moves.

Notes for Ultimate Traffic Users
================================
The bases work best with UT summer or spring traffic. Winter seaplane traffic is reduced. This release has only been tested with the UT May 2004 schedule.

After copying the files to your scenery folder, you will first need to run CollectAirports.exe. This will be in your Ultimate Traffic folder, likely FS9/Flight One Software/Ultimate Traffic. If you have another version or copy of CollectAirports.exe on your machine, do not run that. It is necessary to run only the copy in your Ultimate Traffic folder.

Then, using the Airport Assignments utility, you will need to assign airports as follows. Some may already be assigned.

Search for: Assign to:
CXH CYHC
KEH S60
LKE W55
RCE W39
YDS CAM6 (substitution for Desolation Sound)
YGN CAV5 (substitution for Greenway Sound)
YRR CAF6
YWH CYWH
ZNA CAC8

You will end up with some flights going to land-based airports (FRD, LPS, YCD, ODW, RSJ, WSX). FS9 can’t handle mixed mode flights like this, so you’ll see planes skidding down the runways at those airports. They seem quite happy, and I think they might stop faster. Bonus.

You will also need to decide what aircraft to use. Use the Aircraft Assignments utility in UT to assign aircraft to Kenmore Air (DHP), Harbour Air (DHL) and West Coast Air (DHP and DHT). As above, simplest option is to assign the default Cessna Amphibian. You could also use the Aviat A1-B Husky available at the usual sites, and then you’ll get nifty wakes and spray. Note though you will only see wakes from one or two aircraft at a time if more than that are operating.
